Descrio:

Nowadays technological innovation is changing and reaching all industry domains. The systems present in these several different areas are becoming more complex with the extend of their functionalities and their technological stack. The car is one of most complex systems, and it owes this status due to the importance it represents for the modern societies and the delicate context in which it operates. Its technological evolution is changing the way they work (e.g., Autonomous Driving) and how people interact with it. This paradigm shift has instigated the development and appearance in the automotive market of convoluted Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), In-vehicle Information systems (IVIS) and interconnected services [1]. Those systems provide in-vehicle access to new information, allowing the improve of comfort and enhancing road safety. Furthermore, a great number of IVIS functions are featured on portable computing systems, referred as nomadic devices (e.g., mobile phones) that are not allowed to be used while driving due to the inducement of dangerous levels of driver workload [2] [3]. This increase of cockpit workload can instigate driver distraction, resulting in fatal road accidents [4] [5].

In this context, this thesis intends to design and develop an Intelligent HMI system that addresses these concerns and solves the aforementioned problems, regarding, mainly, context-aware information management, driver workload assessment and HMI adaptation. Besides, this thesis will contribute and be part of the Project "P689 - Cockpit of the Future: HMI Concepts and Functions", within the program INNOVCAR from Bosch BrgP in partnership with University of Minho. Briefly, the project goals regards the design and development of an advanced HMI system adequate for (i) semi-autonomous and autonomous driving, (ii) capable of manage the driver workload and (iii) able to adapt itself, taking into account the context and driving scenario.

Objectivos:

- Design and Development of an Intelligent HMI system (which encompasses each of its sub-systems: Workload Assessor, Warning Strategy system, Context-Aware system, and Personalization/Adaptive system);

- Execution and Validation of the final functional Intelligent HMI system;

- Intelligent HMI's integration in the Advanced HMI system developed within the project "P689 - Cockpit of the Future: HMI Concepts and Functions", regarding the program INNOVCAR from Bosch BrgP in partnership with University of Minho;

- Execution and Validation of the final functional and integrated version of the Advanced HMI system.
