Description:

Virtualization is well established in desktops and servers, shifting it to the embedded world is a demanding task. While in servers, each partition can run independently. The same does not happen in embedded systems as their functionalities are spread across multiple cooperating subsystems. Hardware virtualization support is seen as a significant improvement, but not many studies address the low/high tier gap. While some of these architectural features could be essential in the high tier systems, in low tier could be overkill and introduce overhead. This master’s thesis intends to is to contribute to the maturity of current hardware virtualization support in the embedded world, mainly focusing on RISC-V hypervisor extensions. By re-examining existing virtualization support on RISC-V architecture and others and proposed some modifications that could be beneficial in the context of the embedded system.
